粤剧 yuèjù noun Cantonese opera 粤剧Guangdong opera, previously known as Cantonese opera. Popular mostly in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong and Macao, and sung in Cantonese, its origins date back to the 17th century. Accompanying musical instruments are clappers (梆子), the gaohu (高胡), and the two-stringed instrument (二弦). The repertoire comprises more than a 1,000 pieces. Among them are The Legend of the Purple Hairpin (《紫钗记》) and Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom (《蝶影红梨记》). |
