汤圆 tānɡyuán noun sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour served in the water they are boiled in 汤圆Round dumplings, traditionally eaten on the 15th day of the new lunar year, and known as yuanxiao (元宵) in north China (→ 元宵节). They symbolize reunion and success. The dumplings are made of glutinous rice, and contain a sweet or savoury filling. They are usually boiled in water. Southern dumplings are made by adding a filling to a ball of dough. Northern dumplings are made by putting damp fillings into dry glutinous rice flour, and shaking the flour until the fillings are covered and a ball has formed. These kind of dumplings are known as ‘shaken yuanxiao’(摇元宵). |
