红楼梦 hónɡlóumènɡ noun A Dream of Red Mansions《红楼梦》A long work of fiction from the Qing Dynasty and one of the four famous classical Chinese novels. Its original name was The Story of the Stone (《石头记》) and the author is credited as Cao Xueqin (曹雪芹). However, only 80 of the work's 120 chapters are believed to have been written by Cao Xueqin, with the last 40 chapters added by Gao E (高鹗). The novel with its huge cast of characters tells the story of four big families named Jia, Wang, Shi and Xue and the tale of the rise and fall of the Jia household, the tragic love story of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu and the unhappy lives of many young girls in feudal society. |
