线装 xiànzhuānɡ adjective thread-bound ▸ 线装书 thread-bound Chinese book 线装书Xianzhuang (线装) is a traditional method of bookbinding in which the pages are folded with the printed side outwards and the blank side inwards, the margins are aligned, covers added, the raw edges trimmed, and holes are made for the thread to pass through. Most thread-bound books have soft covers, and are often produced in a number of volumes, with a hard case added for protection. Thread-bound books flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties. They are easy to browse through, do not come apart, and are still used today. |
