国民党 Guómíndǎnɡ noun ① (泛指) nationalist party ② (中国国民党) Kuomintang (KMT) 中国国民党A political party of Taiwan. Known in its romanized form as the Kuomintang (KMT). The party was founded in 1912 by Sun Yat-sen (孙中山), following the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty. It became the ruling party of China with a provisional government based in Nanjing in 1927. Following the Communist victory in 1949, the Party, led by Chiang Kaishek (蒋介石), retreated to Taiwan. The KMT today forms part of the Pan-Blue coalition which supports reunification with the mainland. The KMT is guided by the ‘Three People’s Principles’(→ 三民主义). The party flag is a white sun against a blue sky. |
