天坛 Tiāntán noun Temple of Heaven 天坛The largest extant altar and temple structure in China, located in south-eastern Beijing. Ming and Qing emperors came here to offer sacrifices to heaven and pray for a good harvest. Construction started in 1420 in the reign of the Emperor Yongle, with reconstruction in the Qing Dynasty. In 1998 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
